Our text comes from Matthew 28.16-20

16 But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated to them. 17And when they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some were doubtful.

18And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.

19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to follow all that I commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

“How was your trip?”

  • You can travel the world with an iPhone and a backpack.

  • You can be surrounded by thousands of people in an airport, and still be lonely.

  • International travel is tiresome; 6 plane rides, over 32 hrs in the air, 12k miles round trip.

  • Airplane restrooms are designed more for humiliation than relief.

  • It’s an honor to train pastors who are doing good work in dark places.

On the Nile

v16

  • Judas could have and should have been there- the choice was his

  • Some people will self select out

  • Jesus met with them at a mountain in Galilee

v17

  • Two reactions

    • Worship, proskuneō- to pay homage

    • Doubt, distazō- hesitant

  • How is it that they can travel with him for 3 yrs, see him do miracles and be raised from the dead, and still doubt?

v18

  • All authority has been given to Jesus over two realms- heaven and earth

  • Exousia- the right to control or govern; dominion, an area or sphere of jurisdiction

  • Because of that, he commissions them as his agents to act on his behalf, for his purposes

v19

  • We are to make disciples- mathetes, learners

  • Of all people groups

  • With the seal of water baptism as a sign of salvation and discipleship

  • In the Trinitarian formula

v20

  • Teaching them to follow his commandments

  • Understand that He will be with you until the end of time

  • We are not alone on His mission

Practical application- 5 questions

  1. Will you self select out, or will  you be a part of His mission?

  2. Will you worship, or doubt?

  3. Will you accept His commission, to do His work?

  4. Will you make disciples of all people groups, even the ones you don’t like?

  5. Will you point them to Him, and not yourself?
